WAH-ZHINGA -SKAH

My name is Wah-Zhinga-Skah which means White Bird and I am from the Absentees Shawnee and Ponca tribes.
I started out singing at First Indian Baptist Church in Shawnee Oklahoma when I was 9 years old.
Two years later my passion for music met its climax where my determination led me to teach myself the piano.
When I began 6th grade I joined the middle school band playing the Clairnet which taught me how to read music
notes. As my family and I went on road trips to almost every pow-wow in the state of Oklahoma I would be in
the back seat studying music.
By my mid 20s my music career began to escalate. After serving 2 years as the
pianist for Cornerstone Indian Baptist Church, I was called to join the band as a volunteer pianist for
Hooked on Jesus Prison Ministry. Traveling to different prisons across Oklahoma, I also took on the role of
lead singer of the group.
In November 2004, with the assistance of Heartland Recording Studio, I recorded my
first album. After resigning from the prison ministry I decided to accept the duties and title of Music Director
at Cornerstone Indian Baptist Church. On the side, I began to lead music and perform at various churches for
different occasions, particularly with Native American congregations.
In the recent past, I was also honored
to lead worship at the Western Oklahoma Indian Baptist Women’s Conference in Weatherford Oklahoma. Today, I
have accepted the position as the Music Director for Indian Community Church in Oklahoma City and I am currently
a senior at Oklahoma Baptist University, studying Foreign Missions and Worship Arts.
In the future, my plans are
to continue pursuing a musical vocation amongst the Native American communities across the United States
and eventually go international.
